Stop Words: The "Empty Calories" Of Your Resume And Cover Letter

March 9, 2026

Stop words don't improve your resume or Cover Letter.

When an AI (Applicant Tracking System) scans your application, it isn't reading for "flair." It is looking for signals. One of the biggest obstacles to a high matching score is the presence of too many stop words.

What are Stop words?

In the world of Natural Language Processing (NLP), "stop words" are the most common words in a language—like the, is, at, which, and on.

While these are necessary for human grammar, AI filters often strip them out to find the "meat" of the sentence (the keywords). If your resume or cover letter is 60% stop words, your "keyword density" drops, making you look like a weaker match for the job.

1. The Problem with "Fluff" and "Filler"

Beyond basic grammar, there is a second type of stop word: The Professional Filler. These are overused phrases that take up space without adding value.

  • Avoid: "I am a highly motivated professional with a proven track record of..."

  • The Problem: "Highly," "motivated," "professional," and "proven track record" are all treated as noise by many modern algorithms. They don't provide a measurable skill.

2. How to Minimize Stop words for AI Success

To help the AI (and the recruiter) find your value quickly, you need to increase your Information Density.

  • The "Action-Result" Formula: Instead of using long introductory clauses, start with an action verb.

    • Before: "I was responsible for the management of a team of ten people." (11 words)

    • After: "Managed 10-person team." (3 words)

  • Remove "That" and "Which": Often, you can delete these words without losing any meaning.

    • Before: "A project that involved the installation of..."

    • After: "Project involved installing..."

  • Use Strong Nouns: Instead of using an adjective + a weak noun, use one strong noun.

    • Before: "Provided a very high level of support."

    • After: "Delivered expert support."

3. The Human Factor: Readability

While you want to minimize stop words for the AI, don't delete all of them. A document with zero stop words reads like a grocery list and can feel robotic to a human recruiter.

The Golden Rule: Aim for concise clarity. If a word doesn't add a specific skill, a metric, or a necessary grammatical bridge—delete it.

Conclusion: Make Every Word Count

In a competitive job market, space on your resume is "prime real estate." Don't let stop words move in and take up the room that should belong to your achievements.
