Resume File Format

When loading your resume is of importance to use the correct file format. The preference for most ATS applications is either .docx or .pdf file formats but do they allow other file formats such as .doc or .txt. The Microsoft Word .docx file format is preferred, and the safest file format, whilst .pdf can look perfectly fine to a human, but when parsed by the ATS software, it can have adverse results depending on what software package you used to create the .pdf file.

There are numerous pdf writers or printers available, and the outcome of the pdf file can vary and give adverse results. Below are some of the examples of errors that can occur once the ATS application parses the pdf.

Files created or printed by Adobe Acrobat PDF writer or BullZip PDF file printer from a word processing document are amongst the most accurate and reliable. To use Adobe Acrobat, you to purchase a licence whilst the Bullzip PDF printer is still available as a free community edition version.

If you don't have access to Microsoft Word, you can always download and install Liber Office or Apache OpenOffice. Open-source applications are free to use, and both Liber Office Writer or OpenOffice Writer can save files in a .docx format.

Both applications, Liber Office and Apache OpenOffice, can be downloaded from their official websites.
